Where did you find good perspective on home buying?

#1

Hi, everyone. What are your favorite sources for helpful writing on buying a house and what the journey is like?

Looking for anything from categories like:

  • First-person narratives
  • Retrospectives on the journey
  • “What I Learned” pieces

Throw your links below, please, if you have some.

Thanks!

Not sure if this is what you want, but here are my thoughts:

I’ve written a lot about my own buying decision for the first house hack! But when I was looking for good perspective and feedback on the process, I turned to my grandparents and my parents. They’ve purchased homes with the intent to live in them and/or invest, and have been through the ringer so many times in the same market (LA). Huge help, picking their brains on what matters (schools, light, HOA, bathroom setup for renters) and what doesn’t (fixtures, specific neighborhood qualities, etc.).

Thanks to them I’ve backed out of deals that weren’t in my best long-term interests and stuck with the ones that have seen solid (10%+) returns. I know not everyone is so lucky to have access to this type of insight and experience, so I defintely make the most of it.

I wrote about our experience back in 2014. http://onecentatatime.com/first-time-home-buying-my-experience-of-online-mortgage-shopping/

I think having a good agent makes all the difference in the world. They will help you prioritize and make decisions that are right for you. They’ll guide you when you are unsure and help you even if you don’t really realize that you need help.

Thank you, everyone.

I just did a #CreditChat with Experian on the subject of home buying if you’d like to check it out:

Hope that helps!

Thank you.

I would encourage you to go to local real estate meet up groups, or seach for events for homerbuyers on Eventbrite. The market is different depending on where you are, so networking with people locally is really helpful. The events aren’t just for investors. Many agents throw meet and greet coffee sessions for first-time buyers.

Thanks.

My interest is not in learning about buying houses; I am a 15-year veteran of the mortgage industry and my company specializes in mortgage- and real estate content.

What I’m looking for is emotional-like content: first-person narratives, retrospectives, and “why”; content that talks about the fears and anxiety of buying a home.

Specifically, I’m looking for “why I decided to buy a house” without hearing about the math. I looking for the humanity in the journey.

If this is something you’ve written about, please reach out.
