Me too! High five!
Luckily my first job chose to pay me at $8.39 an hour. I was so excited and when I told my parents about it after being told I was going to be hired for about $8 an hour, I was going to tell my bosses it was too much.
“Don’t do that.” My mother said as she shook her head with a slight chuckle.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Because this will be the last time you ever feel like you’re overpaid and soon enough you’ll say that isn’t enough for the crap that they put you through.”
Within 6 months, my job forced me to do something physically impossible safely and got injured. I definitely won’t forget how “appreciative” they were after I told them I was hurt: a shrug and being told “that’s why we pay you.”
