This year was a tad wonky when it came to both income and spending: I moved out of my parents house April 2016 and have lived in 3 different apartments since then (with roommates!). I didn't work full time since I was still in school in spring and I had a series of long-planned vacations- a cousin got married, I visited out of country family, etc. Additionally I haven't quite taken over all of my expenses though I will be shortly. I started buying my car off my parents in September and I'll be getting my own car insurance in February. My parents are still paying my phone bills and health insurance.
I don't have my spreadsheet in front of me just yet but I recently ran the numbers. In 2016 I made about $16,000 and spent between $12,500 and $13,000 of that. That's a savings rate of roughly 20% which I honestly didn't think I'd make this year.
Since you were particularly interested in food: I spent about $80 a month on groceries and $50 a month dining out. So together and annualized that's $1560 or less than 15% of what I spent total.
Most of my money went to rent payments. As in over 50%.
