So here is an interesting thought exercise:
You’ve been plotting and scheming your FIRE strategy like an evil cartoon bad guy plans global domination.
Day by day you get ever closer to your goal… optimising, saving, investing… if you wish hard enough it may even happen.
Then one day you realise you’ve made it, achieved the desired outcome. You are now technically Financially Independent, possibly even able to Retire Early. Hooray for you, you’ve earned a victory dance!
But wait a minute… there is no marching band… no ticker tape parade… hell, you don’t even get a lousy t-shirt for joining the club! The crowd doesn’t go wild, in fact they don’t even notice. Nobody notices. Except for you. Ho-hum.
No matter, you did it for yourself, not for external validation or adoration of the masses. Still it would be nice to at least get an 'attaboy/girl for all your hard work. Fear not, that is what the rockstar finance forums are for!
Next stop the Galapagos… Kilimanjaro… Camino de Santiago… except you realise that tomorrow you still have to get your kids to school on time. And they still have that horrible project to complete on the weekend. And your spouse actually enjoys the job they do, where they get paid next to nothing, but from which they derive so much of their identity.
The big question you face is: Now what?
You could pull your kids out of school, home school them. Except they would miss their friends… and playing team sports… and having their own identities away from their family. Academically they will probably end up smarter for the experience (your mileage may vary, we aren’t all cut out to be gifted teachers), though possibly socially retarded as a consequence.
You could trade your job for unemployment television, or a career as a professional xbox player… killing the hours between school drop off and pick up. Except that isn’t the reason you worked so hard to extract yourself from the corporate wage slave trap.
Or you could keep on prostituting yourself, trading your time for money, while you wait for your kids to leave the nest and your spouse to be ready to retire.
QUESTION IS: What would YOU do?
