I am a new blogger writing out of Roanoke, Va. JumpStartfromScratch was created in Nov. I am a high school physics teacher. My oldest son is a senior in high school, and is taking my physics class this year. My daughter is a freshman at my school. I was pretty overwhelmed by the daunting task of putting my kids through college. If college costs $25k per year, I am looking at a $200k price tag over the next 7 years. $200k is every bit of 4 years of my salary. I should have began planning earlier, but during my son's senior year, I began to freak out. To cope I began reading everything available and started planning/scheming. The blog has helped me organize my thoughts and share what I have learned.
My wife earns the same salary by teaching kindergarten. 4 years ago, we made a pretty big financial move, and bought a small townhouse in Myrtle Beach. We spend our summers there enjoying the beach, and find someone to enter a 10 month lease in the off-season.
We enjoy travel our family has done some pretty great trips. I have never been in credit card debt, but credit cards have paid for most of that travel. Over the last 5 years, we have applied for and gotten bonuses on tons of credit cards. I do not have any unique ideas, but I read several blogs on "travel hacking" and take their advice. We currently have over 1.5 million miles/points spread out through all the airline and hotel programs.
The focus of my blog is that my children are starting from scratch financially. I want to jumpstart their financial world. They need college educations with no/low debt, but I won't go bankrupt putting them through school. They need to build high credit scores, and I have found very little information on scores at age 18. I want to strategically open lots of accounts in order to earn bonuses of cash, frequent flyer miles and hotel points, so that they have a nice stash of cash/miles/points at college graduation.
While doing all of this, I want to teach them how to manage their finances responsibly.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this forum. I have learned tons from reading blogs on lots of topics. It is amazing how much free information is waiting for you on blogs.
