Thanks, birdsofafire! I knew a senior American Airlines pilot who only bid four 3-day long haul trips to South American cities per month and he had 18 days off per month. His explanation for the preference was to stay in the same time zones and get his work over with. That’s definitely the exception, though, he was at the end of his career!
In my case, I sometimes flew 9 flights a day which was super exhausting with short overnights in often crummy hotels, so the prestige was lost quickly for me
Some people lived in crashpads to save money, but it wasn’t much of a life because house rules were always that you couldn’t bring anyone over to visit!
The one thing it does offer is unlimited travel, so if you wanted to try a different country on each block of days off, airfare is free (or nearly so). Most people were too tired of traveling for that, though.
